Prof. Dr. Alexander Kel
Alexander Kel received his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology and Genetics in 1990.
He studied biology and mathematics at Novosibirsk State University and obtained his M.S. in biology with special focus on mathematical biology in 1985.
The research experience of Dr. Kel in Bioinformatics totals in more than 35 years. He worked in almost all branches of current bioinformatics: sequence analysis, gene recognition, promoter/enhancer analysis and prediction, prediction of RNA secondary structure, analysis of signal transduction pathways, identification of drug targets, systems biology and systems medicine.
Alexander is the author of the “fuzzy puzzle” concept for modelling the combinatoric nature of gene regulatory regions in the genome. Dr. Kel has also developed a modelling approach called “upstream analysis”, which was applied for identification of causative biomarkers and drug targets in cancer, IBD, COPD, Parkinson’s disease, and other pathologies in more than 20 national and international research projects.
He is the author of more than 130 scientific publications and several chapters in books on bioinformatics and systems biology. Currently, Alexander Kel is the CEO and CSO of geneXplain GmbH in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, as well as the visiting Professor at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Dublin, Ireland.
